Negative result for the second year in a row ›

Passenger traffic at the Port was at an exceptionally low level due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but cargo traffic reached a record-breaking level. The company’s turnover was EUR 68.8 million. Loss for the financial year totalled EUR -15 million.

Travelling slowed down by restrictions ›

Due to travel restrictions brought about by the covid-19 pandemic, the Port of Helsinki’s total number of passengers only reached 3.7 million, which was clearly less than in the first year of the pandemic.

Long-term parking at Helsinki’s West Harbour was moved to the new Satamaparkkitalo car park, near West Terminal 2 and West Terminal 1. The car park primarily serves ship passengers using West Harbour, but also businesses, residents and visitors in the area. Read more about the Satamaparkkitalo

March

The Finnish Food Authority transferred its border control post from Hakuninmaa to Vuosaari Harbour. The post operating in the gate area will speed up the border control of many port customers.

The Port of Helsinki took part in the Baltic Sea Action Group’s info event for providing international cargo ships with information about the special conditions of the Baltic Sea and the No Special Fee payment system of Baltic Sea ports.

WWF Finland audited the environmental programme of the Port of Helsinki’s HQ. Satamatalo passed the inspection and was granted the right to use Green Office’s panda label. The operation of Satamatalo’s environmental management system meets the WWF’s criteria, and the port is committed to continuously improving its operations.

The Port of Helsinki’s new advance parking reservation service satamaparkki.fi was introduced. The reservation service makes travel even smoother as customers can make reservations for parking at West Harbour in advance online.

Renovation work on the restaurant facilities of the Olympia Terminal were completed, and the Bistro O restaurant opened its doors on May Day 2021 with renewed food and beverage offerings and premises. The renovated premises feature facilities for almost 400 customers and a sunny terrace with a beautiful view towards the sea.

June

Construction work was started on a dual ramp in Vuosaari Harbour for the RoPax ship traffic to Muuga, Tallinn. Using two vehicle ramps in the harbour at the same time will speed up the vehicle loading process and shorten ship turnaround times. To be completed in summer 2022, the new ramp will facilitate up to three RoPax ship calls a day.

Passenger traffic did not recover to its normal level during the first half of the year. However, the positive tone of cargo traffic balanced the overall situation of the company.

July

In the summer season, shipping companies operated several ships and also implemented all-new cruise routes to Hanko and Mariehamn. As sea travel increased, restaurant and parking services of Helsinki’s passenger terminals could also be opened.

The Port introduced a new automated mooring system in West Harbour, at the berth used by the Eckerö Line ship MS Finlandia. The system speeds up the mooring and unmooring of vessels, as well as reducing emissions in West Harbour and its surrounds.

August

As restrictions on entry were lightened, international cruise traffic could be started again. The first visitor since 2019 was M/S Artania. The cruise sector had carefully prepared for safe travel.

Certified Business Coach Katja Riikola MBA started as the HR director of Port of Helsinki Ltd. She is particularly passionate about the development of organisational culture and management.

October

During the exceptionally short cruise season, the Port of Helsinki recorded 14 cruise ship visits, which provided nearly 11,000 international cruise passengers with a chance to experience Helsinki and the metropolitan area.

November

Work to deepen the Vuosaari fairway and port basin was completed. Thanks to the cooperative project between the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the City of Helsinki and the Port of Helsinki, Vuosaari Harbour can receive larger container ships in the future. This will decrease the environmental impacts of container traffic.

December

Continuing its annual campaign, the Port of Helsinki gave an immaterial Christmas gift to the Baltic Sea through the Baltic Sea Action Group’s Ei vettä, pohjaa rakkaampaa project. The campaign fits in seamlessly with the Port of Helsinki’s environmental goals.
